No, Tom, you are not the only one…but for some of us, it’s hardly news…

I was pointed to this by one of my twitter contacts this evening.

Tom Humphries is one of the best, if not the best sports writers in Ireland. But somehow, I found this hard to swallow.

Am I alone in finding the experience of watching Dunne’s demise on Saturday a little too close to the pornography of violence?

This is the nature of boxing. Whether you like it or not, it’s a glorification of violence and it doesn’t matter who’s doing the boxing, who is on the losing side, who is the winner.

I’ve never liked boxing, never found it attractive as a sport, never wanted to qualify it as a sport. And certainly, it’s more frequently closer to the pornography of violence than anything as graceful as ballet, or indeed, that other maligned so called sport, ice-skating.

You couldn’t possibly be alone Tom, because some of us have felt that way about boxing for years and years. It’s naive to assume that this time, it’s somehow special. It’s not.
