The quick trip I made to the post office this morning to collect a box from Finland was to the soundtrack of Phantom FM because I did not have my iPod with me. Fortunately, Phantom had the good taste to be be playing Velouria by the Pixies. It is my favourite Pixies song.
Two items of news caught my interest today.
Mary is apparently back in Knock.
“Many of these people have photos, videos . . . images are even on YouTube . . . and yet the people who disbelieve the most are the clergy.”
Youtube videos and the lot. Meanwhile, the local commercial rep for the Church in the west, the boy in Tuam, is none too convinced.
There are words lining up fighting inside my mind to try and describe how I feel about this. I don’t buy it for various complex reasons of my own. If it shows anything, however, it shows that there are people desperately searching for some form of hope. This is not good. It means that they’re not finding it in their daily lives.
For society, this is perhaps a serious cause for concern.
Vegetarian diet is better for the environment.
Lord Stern has the meat eaters firmly in his sight for eco fascism concerns. I’m getting decidedly concerned about the dictatorial nature of environmentally minded people, or the more high profile amongst them. The way I see it, life isn’t going to be much fun anyway if this lot get their way. We might as well die out. I’m starting to wonder if we misread the end of various empires in ancient times and that in fact, they died out as a result of proscriptive “the end is nigh” policies. At some point, someone is going to find the tablet in Pompei that reveals a carbon tax along with the banning of something enjoyable in 79 AD.
