I realised today that there was a time I used to watch television. Seriously. In foreign places I had television on the go most of the time. I don’t know what I watched besides Buffy the Vampire Slayer in Flemish but there you have it.
Being somewhat housebound courtesy of the very seasonal weather, I flicked the channels today. I’m not sure how many i have but even if you leave out the Plus One channels where the same thing as was on E4 is on E4+1 an hour later stylee, I probably have about 60 television channels. And I practically never watch them. Partly that’s because I don’t know what’s on – upc’s digital guide is unwieldy and slow and entertainment.ie doesn’t list all the channels I have.
Today, however, I was in the mood for some downhill skiing, snowboarding, figure skating or some such that I like, as opposed, to, for example, biathlon, Nordic combined, bobsleigh, Africa Cup of Nations, and spectacularly, a day full of breakdancing (wtf?) courtesy of Eurosport, Eurosport 2 and Extreme Sports. I was particularly disappointed with Extreme to be honest, because while I could probably have coped with BMX competitions, the breakdancing was a step too far and it appeared to be on all the bloody day long. Never mind, Dancing on Ice starts on TV3 tonight, so if I’m really badly stuck I can see Emma Bunton judging a bunch of celebrities (some of whom I’ve even heard of, in direct contrast to Celebrity Big Brother, all of whose celebrity is questionable with the possible exception of Vinnie Jones and even then….) learning to be ice dancers. But skating has slightly palled in interest for me since Friday night when BBC served me up Blades of Glory which has to be the worst film I have ever seen. I gather Blown Away was worse, but I never saw it anyway. Blades of Glory was spectacularly bad.
Friday night wasn’t really that great either. I ploughed my way through bits of Sweet November in which Keanu Reeves told Charlize Theron he loved her several times and she decided to go off and die on her own anyway. Very cheerful and uplifting stuff. I wouldn’t mind, I don’t even expect great acting from Keanu Reeves; he just needs to look like Neo in the Matrix and I’ll be good. Unfortunately. Apart from that, 3e was showing loads of Sex In the City, and I rediscovered why I didn’t think much of it the first 4 dozen times I saw any of it and eventually Living/Living+1 was dishing up Criminal Minds. But it was one of the weird disturbing ones. Comparatively, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was an oasis of normality but no one was showing it at 1am on Saturday morning. Can’t remember what was on SciFi.
I know from trailers that I happened across that the History Channel is coming up with another series of “How the Earth was Made”, a couple of which I saw on “How the Earth Was Made Day” during the Christmas holidays. I want to see that. I’d nearly want a box set of that because it was stunning. And fascinating. And I got the one on Yellowstone and I am fascinated by the super volcano under Yellowstone since Horizon did a special on it about 8 years ago and scared the bejaysus out of one of my flatmates. I think I’ll order it. It looks really cool.
I think I like documentaries most of all but you don’t always find the good ones. Most of the time that I happened across History Channel in the past, it was refighting World War II.
