This cold

01.07.10

Despite my having every radiator in the house on, it’s still freezing. It’s not an old house so I am going to assume that part of the issue is the house having been empty and cold over Christmas and I’m leaving the heat on all day long.

I’m getting sick of this cold. We’re not equipped to deal with it and instead of recognising it, most people are moaning about it. In particularly, there’s moaning about Dublin Bus cutting services, downing tools and going home. I’ve been driving on the roads lately in a Ford Fiesta. You’d have to pay me a lot of money before I’d drive a double decker bus down the M1 the way it was yesterday evening. One bus skids and it’s all over, basically.

Other countries that have to deal with this sort of a lark on a regular basis have lots of snow ploughs. We tend not to need them except in the Sally Gap and we can probably live without the Sally Gap for the more normal few days that it gets cut off owing to snow. So I’m not in tune with demands that “something” be done. As for the bus systems, I’ve seen the bus systems in Lyon France and Hildesheim Germany trashed by snow. Yes, they get back on the road but they both had something in common – their municipal systems ran single decker buses. They’ve a lower centre of gravity. I’d fancy my chances better with a single decker than with a double decker in conditions like this, to be frank.

Meanwhile, I’m freezing and I don’t find it attractive at all. I’d prefer to be somewhere warm and sunny.
