Koh – somewhere in the city centre near the Jervis St Shopping Centre

Was there last night. Set menu – shared starters, main meal – Singapore noodles, shared desserts.
The food was lovely. I would cheerfully go back there again although frankly I’d try to go back the night there isn’t a party for 50 kitesurfers if I was looking to dine a deux, for example. But I can’t [...]

Two bits of music

I’m boiling over with stuff I want to say; so much I’m no longer sure where to begin. However, I was out late last night so am not firing on any cylinders at all.
Two tracks which have caught my attention lately – electronic/chill for advanced warning.

Chicane – No ordinary morning. I like this a lot.
I [...]

Say hello to my thyme plant

The strawberries are all basically buried under an inch or two of snow at the moment. A trip around the estate where I live revealed a number of palm trees covered in snow.
It’s all very beautiful.

Wednesday evening television

With an office set up, more or less…it’s happened that I’m not joined umbillically to my computer any more so…Last night I watched some television. I very, very rarely do this. It’s how I manage to avoid ads which is really important in the grand scheme of things.
Last night, however, I managed to spend three [...]

Dora and Marten have split up

I don’t read very many web comics but about 3 or 4 years ago I discovered something called Questionable Content, because it did a funny day swap with XKCD which I’m sure everyone in the world knows about. Nor do I watch soap operas. However, there’s something very engaging about QC in a soap operaish [...]

Yesterday…yesterday

Yesterday I started a draft listing the things that really, really annoy me about the new house. I was in a very bad mood because of the oven which I’ve already whinged about. However, I’m really going to summarise it as follows:

who decided that sloping window sills in the bathroom and kitchen were a good [...]

little oases…Stitch in Beaumont

My mother is about to start knitting a cardigan for my great niece, one that she saw in the Woman’s Weekly. They occasionally have interesting looking knitting and crochet patterns; I’ve a cardigan set aside upstairs. Anyway, she toured the yarn shops in Cork and drew a blank on the yarn she was looking for [...]

Andy Irons, surfer.

You know the world is changing when you get unexpected news via twitter instead of via the radio. Last night, from a retweet from some skateboarder, I heard Andy Irons, the surfer, had died.
I’ve never met him, but he won the world championship 3 times, and the last time I watched him surf I think [...]

outside…it’s raining

And yes, this is Ireland, and I know it rains. But this is also November, the month of winter storms. So not only is it wet, it is raining. It is what I call hot chocolate and duvet weather. I never do it of course; the duvet is too much hassle to be dragging up [...]

Nights at the Al-hambra, Loreena McKennitt

Flutering around the world music section in FNAC yesterday I came across this DVD by Loreena McKennitt and pondered buying it. It was a concert in the Al-hambra, south of Spain, an iconic building if ever there was one, but it was Loreena McKennitt whom sometimes I get, but mostly I don’t. As it was [...]
